Matt Angell, with his soulful originality, has emerged as a unique and distinctive singer/songwriter. Growing up in Karratha, a small mining town in the Pilbara region on Western Australia's Northwest coast, Matt’s first forays into music began when a kindly school teacher gave him a sheet of paper with a few cords on it and lent him an old guitar, which had blown out the back of a Mini Moke. As time passed, he managed to get the odd lesson here and there when he could, but mainly taught himself to play from books and records. Matt thanks his neighbours for not calling the cops those first few years, when each afternoon the neighbourhood would be overcome with the sounds of a 15 year old boy trying to play like Jimi Hendrix. You see, Matt lived out the back in a caravan with no air-conditioning, so, with windows open, the racket of a 100 watt amp would blow the cockatoos from the gum trees and fill the airways. While he never quite became the next Jimi, he was always writing his own tunes. The rugged landscape and isolation of the area gradually infused itself into his song writing and while there is a harshness and barrenness to this land, there is also beauty, a beauty that is uniquely reflected in his music. It is a hybrid of Roots, Folk, Blues and Country, stripped back to reveal the essence of each song.
The credo is:
Keep it simple. Keep it real. As it should be.
Being somewhat of a nomad, Matt has spent much of his adult life coming and going here and there, mostly scratching out a living playing music or doing the odd “real job” when times get a little tough. As such, he has performed over much of Australia, in particular Airlie Beach, North Queensland, where he has spent the majority of the last 7 years on and off.
2005 saw the release of Matt’s debut self-titled album. The album featured 12 original tracks and was recorded at The White Room Recording Studio in Brisbane. In mid 2007, Matt moved down to Melbourne to take time off from performing and focus on the writing and recording of a new album.
2009 see’s the release of this long awaited follow up album “The Blue Light Show” which was recorded at Woodstock Studios, Melbourne by Troy Trigwell. Acoustic in flavour, the idea for the record had been in the back of Matt’s mind for about 10 years. It is an album with plenty of space and clarity with a definitive mood, a mood we feel the title “The Blue light Show” seems to sum up better than any labels.
This project is a labour of love for Matt. Entirely self funded, he is proud to be an independent artist who is able to make the music he wants to, without having to satisfy the corporate suits.
While currently of no fixed abode, 2009 see’s Matt following his hat and any opportunities that may arise to promote and spread his music. So if you see a white Toyota Van with green and purple crushed velvet curtains pull into town, give it a wave…..it might be him!
